GIPEX — Geospatial Indicators for Proxy Environmental eXposure — is the extraction engine on the Place Alert Labs platform, built for the CHEAQI-MNCH project (Characterizing Effects of Air Quality In Maternal, Newborn and Child Health). It computes, for every cell of a study grid, a rich set of environmental-exposure proxies derived from Earth observation and geospatial data.
Much of sub-Saharan Africa has sparse ground-based air-quality and weather monitoring. GIPEX bridges that gap: from Sentinel-2 spectral indices and MODIS composites, to ERA5 meteorology, Sentinel-5P/TROPOMI pollutant gases (NO₂, SO₂, CO, HCHO, O₃), aerosol and model PM2.5, GHSL population and built-up surface, land cover, terrain, night-time lights and OSM road-emission proxies — all harmonised onto one grid.
Across this course you will load or define a study grid, run an extraction, and explore the results on interactive maps (point and 100 m pixel-surface views, switchable basemaps, road overlays), time series, correlations and distributions — then export indicators as GeoTIFF, NetCDF or CSV for your own analysis.
GIPEX is access-controlled: you request access here, and once approved you use the live tool in your browser — nothing to install.
